Peeling Back the Layers: How Elaine Nguyen Founded the Intimates Brand Onion

Meet Elaine Nguyen, the founder of Onion, an intimates brand with a fresh, feel-good approach to underwear. Designed in Vancouver, Onion was born out of a personal need—bras that actually feel good to wear. Tired of struggling with discomfort, Elaine set out to create a solution: effortless, supportive pieces designed for those who’ve never quite found the right fit. With bold designs and a playful spirit, Onion is here to change the way people feel in their everyday essentials. Get the inside scoop from Elaine and learn more about the journey, challenges, and inspirations behind Onion.

Tell us about your work.

Last year, I took a leap and left my nine-to-five to chase something I truly believed in. For years, I struggled with back and shoulder pain from my bras—nothing felt supportive and comfortable enough to wear all day. One day, I thought, “Why not create the bra I’ve been searching for?” That idea became Onion. It’s for people like me—who always hated wearing bras but still wanted something that feels good. All of our styles are designed here in Vancouver, with comfort as the priority (because we all know how much Vancouverites value comfort).

How would you describe your brand?

Onion is bold, fun, and here to shake up an intimates industry that’s been stuck in its ways for too long. I'd like to think of Onion as your cooler, older sister. She’ll look out for you and always has your back, but she’s not afraid to speak her mind.

“Whatever your passions, interests, or curiosities are, stop thinking about it and just do it. I promise you, it's not cringe, it's not weird, it's not crazy. Just do it.”

What do you love most about what you do?

I get to live my dream life and build something that is mine. The best part? Creating products, messaging, and content that people can relate to. I work 12+ hour days, but it never really feels like work, and I think that’s what we should all strive for—doing something that fuels us.

What challenges have you faced in your journey?

One of my biggest challenges has been content creation. I have a whole new appreciation for influencers and creators—putting out fresh, engaging content every day is not easy. Social media was totally out of my comfort zone at first, but after putting in the hours, it’s gone from something I dreaded to something I actually enjoy. And funny enough, it’s also become one of the most rewarding parts of my journey because I get to share Onion’s story in a way that truly connects with people.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out?

Don't think, just do. Whatever your passions, interests, or curiosities are, stop thinking about it and just do it. I promise you, it's not cringe, it's not weird, it's not crazy. Just do it.
