Exploring the Creative Process of Artist & Ceramicist Taylor Moon
Introducing Taylor Moon, a Vancouver-based ceramic artist whose journey began with a simple desire to try something new. What started as a hand-building class evolved into a deep exploration of internal chaos through clay and other mediums. In this feature, Taylor shares her creative process, the challenges she's faced along the way, and her advice for those looking to dive into the world of art and self-expression. Whether it’s the fear of not being enough or the joy of connecting with others through her work, Taylor’s story is one of growth, vulnerability, and pushing boundaries. Discover how Taylor’s art has become a powerful tool for personal expression and connection.
Tell us about your work.
I took my first hand-building class in 2019 as soon as I moved to Vancouver, BC. I had no expectations other than wanting to try something new. Little did I know, I would find myself in the mud and continue the journey of attempting to understand my internal chaos through clay and eventually other mediums. My inspiration is pulled from the desperation to make sense of myself and pulsates through my hands until I let it out.
How would you describe your brand?
I would describe my work as child-like, playful, subconscious gunk. If I could call it in my insides and guts, I would.
What do you love most about what you do?
Connection to the others and the world around me! There is something so special about actualizing a piece of myself and having others relate to it and see a part of them in it too. It truly makes my little world go round.
What challenges have you faced in your journey?
FEAR! Fear of everything. Fear of being too much, fear of not being enough. It is a internal battle that I am working on. But generally just the fear of it all.
“Put yourself out there and use your voice once you find it…Do not think it will be easy, but know it will be worth it.”
What advice would you give to someone just starting out?
Put yourself out there and use your voice once you find it and it feels authentic. I think the life of art is so special and unique to each individual, and allowing that to flourish in a world that wants sameness and properly packaged pieces, content, and individuals feels terrifying. But it is so much fun to push and pull the boundaries of existing as an artist in this crazy capitalistic world. Do not think it will be easy, but know it will be worth it.
Where can people reach you?
My website is taylormoonceramics.com (the shop is still under construction, but take a look at my portfolio). And of-course, Instagram is where you can tune into my world of chaos @taylormoonceramics.
